DP&L Warns Business Customers: Scam Company Promising Refund on Utility Bill After an Audit
DAYTON, Ohio – September 18, 2012 - Dayton Power & Light (DP&L) has received calls from several business customers who have been contacted and told they may be able to receive a refund on their bills after a meter audit. While the scammers say they are working on behalf of DP&L, this is not the case.
The scam company attempted to get bills from business utility customers on the east coast in August and is now calling DP&L business customers this month. With all the information on the utility bill the scammers could “slam” customers and switch them to another electricity provider without permission.
Alert your local Better Business Bureau if you have been contacted as part of this scam. If you provided the scammers with a copy of your bill, please send an email via www.dpandl.com/email or call the DP&L Business Solutions Center: 800-253-5801.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If someone contacts you and offers to refund your utility bill after you provide your bill or other personal or financial information, it is a scam. The purpose could be to switch your provider without your authorization or to steal your identity or possibly deduct money from your bank account.
Never give anyone information such as your account number, Social Security number, bank account number or credit card number unless you initiated the conversation and you are confident the transaction is legitimate.
